This old 8 x 10 albumen photo is now 110 years old, and fading has set in around the edges of the print. But, it’s a cool shot no matter what.

The photo was sold by the T. ENAMI studio of Yokohama, and was Photo #544 in the Enami Catalog of Prints and Lantern Slides. Many of his customers chose it for inclusion in their souvenir photo albums while looking over his sample prints.

This image is also one of the 60 large, real-photo albumen prints tipped into the better editions of the 10-volume JAPAN – DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE JAPANESE published in 1897 — joining almost 50 other T. Enami photographs appearing in that work.

For some reason, I have the nagging thought that it is one of a few prints that, though sold by Enami, might not have been taken by him.

I often wonder if it was actually photographed by ALDOLFO FARSARI, or even KOZABURO TAMAMURA of Yokohama in the 1880s, and "gifted" to Enami from Tamamura as a "Welcome to Benten Street; here’s an image to help get your portfolio started" when Enami opened his studio there in 1892. Enami and Tamamura enjoyed friendship as well as friendly competition, and pooled their images on a few projects over the years.

Here we have SEVENTEEN PAIRS of Japanese footwear in popular use during the last part of the 19th Century when the photo was taken. The photographer even gives us a side or bottom view for some of the models on display. The names are written in English by a Japanese hand, giving us all in the 21st Century a valuable guide to what might otherwise have been lost to time.

The information that came with the photo says that, in real life, any form of RAIN SHOES were the most common and best selling of all footwear in Japan, regardless of what you might see or deduce from looking at all other posed / staged photographs of Japan.

If those flimsy things on the bottom right are what the ‘rickshaw pullers were using, they must have worn them out pretty fast !
